Chapter One: Introduction

1.1 Background of the Study

Traditional leaders play a pivotal role in preserving and promoting cultural heritage through their influence in local communities. In Sokoto South Local Government Area, Sokoto State, cultural heritage events such as Durbar festivals and traditional dances often rely on the endorsement and active participation of traditional leaders. These leaders serve as custodians of culture, using their platforms to mobilize community support and ensure the continuity of traditions. According to Abdullahi and Usman (2024), the involvement of traditional leaders enhances the authenticity and appeal of cultural events, attracting both local and international audiences. However, their role in promoting cultural heritage events is sometimes undermined by modern challenges, such as urbanization and diminishing cultural values. This study assesses the influence of traditional leaders in promoting cultural heritage events in Sokoto South, focusing on their contributions, challenges, and opportunities.

1.2 Statement of the Problem

Despite the significant role of traditional leaders in cultural heritage preservation, their influence in promoting cultural events in Sokoto South is often limited by factors such as generational shifts, political interference, and inadequate resources. These challenges can lead to a decline in cultural event participation and the erosion of traditional values.
